Due to the nature of the exhibition, some gallery spaces may be closed for installation work throughout 2013, although our popular Victorian street, Kirkgate and new Toy Stories exhibition will remain open throughout.

Castle Challenger activity guidebook

Our Castle Challenger guide book

Our Castle Challenger activity guidebook is aimed at visitors aged six and up. It works like a game and visitors can score points as they tour the museum either on their own or against family or friends. It costs £2.50 and is available from the Admissions desk.

Backpacks are available to take younger children round the museum, as pushchairs cannot be taken around due to fire regulations.

There are baby changing facilities in the disabled toilet and the ladies' toilets close to the shop and also in the ladies' toilets off the Victorian Street.

The cafe has highchairs. Picnics can be eaten in the outdoor Exercise Yard, which is off the Ground Floor close to the York Castle Prison area.

Dogs

We welcome Guide Dogs - no other animals are allowed entry to the museum.

Photography

Photography for personal use is allowed around the museum, but the use of tripods may be restricted when busy.

What our Visitors Think

"I recently spent five weeks visiting historical sites, including museums such as the British Museum and the V&A, all over England, and yours was by far the best regional museum I saw.

Well-designed and with a fascinating display of things I can actually remember! It was great to see this more recent memorabilia as well as the much older artefacts from hundreds of years ago.

A fantastically balanced collection!"

Visitor to York Castle Museum

"I took friends from Scotland round the museum and they were knocked out by the place. We especially enjoyed David and his lovely assistant in the demo kitchen who gave a wonderful exposition on early eating habits. Thanks for a great afternoon.
