LGBT history roadshow at York Castle Museum

The memories, stories and objects that tell York’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history are being sought at a special roadshow at York Castle Museum.

The curators at the museum and archivists at York Explore are holding the Bringing History out of the Closet event on February 7 as part of national LGBT History Month.

It is hoped many different groups will come to the event to talk about their experiences, achievements and challenges as well as looking at the history of gay and civil rights movements in York.

Philip Newton, assistant curator of history, said:

“We are holding this special event as part of LGBT History month in a bid to record this area of York’s rich past which is often overlooked.

“We hope a wide range of people will come forward to share their thoughts and opinions so we can learn more about this part of the city’s past and uncover stories which previously may have been hidden or ignored.”

The event is taking place from 1pm to 4pm in Kirk’s Room at York Castle Museum. It is free to attend.

Philip and other members of the York Castle Museum team will be there with relevant artefacts the museum already has in its collections. It is hoped those attending may bring other relevant objects which help illustrate their stories.

Members of staff from York Explore will also be there to talk to visitors and record their thoughts.
