Motion is all around us in everything we do. It is no surprise that humans have tried to mimic natural movement by bringing inert objects seemingly to life.
Automata are clockwork devices resembling lifelike forms, which appear to move by themselves. These amazing works of engineering reached their peak in the 18th century with luxurious high-quality pieces designed for wealthy audiences. Their animated, realistic movements sparked wonder and disbelief.
Their popularity grew so that by the 19th century, automata were accessible to wider audiences through penny arcade machines and wind-up toys.
Inspired by these creations, this display encourages you to be hands on, explore and be amazed by the wonder of motion. Whether simple or complicated, mechanical and moving toys continue to fascinate and delight!
Please note that the automata machines carry an additional charge to operate. Cash machines are available on site and many of the machines are card operated.
