A Dickensian Christmas on Kirkgate

DATE: 14 November 2019

Every weekend, 16th November — 24th December

Step foot into a story book full of Dickensian characters and surround yourself in the magic of Christmas past at York Castle Museum this festive season.

Every weekend from November 16 the museum’s decorated Victorian street Kirkgate will come to life – will you spot Ebenezer Scrooge as he walks the cobbles or other famous Charles Dickens characters such as Fagin and the Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist.

Shops will be stocked with festive displays and the street will be full of the sounds of the season, including choirs performing by the twinkling Christmas tree.

There is also the chance to create unforgettable memories with York’s favourite Father Christmas as he talks to children ahead of his busiest time of year.

Jo Killeya, head of public programming, said: “This year we have embraced the magic of Charles Dickens’ stories to create a fantastically festive Victorian Christmas experience.

“Ebenezer Scrooge will take visitors on a journey of redemption in an immersive one-man show of A Christmas Carol. Our authentic Victorian shops have some special guests such as Oliver Twist’s Mrs Mann who is out looking for some last minute shopping but always has a moment for a quick gossip along the way.
“But watch out for the mischievous Artful Dodger as he tries to earn a few extra pennies and beware – Fagin is in the mood to pick a pocket or two as he performs magic tricks on unsuspecting passers-by.
“Together with carols by community choirs, the wonderfully decorated street and of course the chance to meet Father Christmas, we hope people will come and soak up the Victorian sights, sounds and traditions which helped shape how we celebrate Christmas today.”

There will also two special performances entitled An Evening with Ebenezer Scrooge on Monday December 16 and Friday December 20, from 7pm to 9:30pm. Walk along the cobbles of Kirkgate for an immersive and intimate production of A Christmas Carol, which brings the magic of a much loved Dickens’ classic to life.
